Manatee County Economic Status
Manatee County Economic Profile Highlights
-
The Sarasota
Bradenton MSA has full recovered beyond its peak
employment of 2000, outpacing the recovery of
other competitor regions (Atlanta, Buffalo,
Charlotte, Greensboro, New Haven, New York, and
Pittsburgh).
- From 1999-2004, Manatee County gained over
8,300 jobs. This job growth was consistent with
state job gains and exceeded US job growth rates
for that period.
- Unemployment in Manatee County continues to
be significantly below national averages (2.4%
in December 2005, compared to 4.9% nationally).
This rate is also at or below unemployment rates
of competitive regions.
- The gross metropolitan product or economic
value produced by Manatee-Sarasota businesses
continues to increase at a rate faster than most
other metro regions - ranking the region 17th
among 361 metro areas in terms of annual GMP
growth between 1994-2004. However, GMP per
capita remains slightly lower than competitive
regions.
Industry Highlights
-
Management of
Companies, Financial Services, and Professional
/ Technical Services accounted for the majority
of new traded sector jobs. These sectors
increased their concentration of employment,
wages and firm growth at rates higher than the
US average.
- Manufacturing sectors experienced mixed
growth over the past five years; food processing
and transportation equipment lost employment,
while fabricated metals and smaller
manufacturing sectors (textiles, woods, and
electrical components) slightly increased
employment concentration.
- Construction sectors showed higher than
average concentrations of employment, reflective
of recent development activity in the region.
