Business Advocacy & Public Policy

The mission of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce’s Public Policy division is to build a positive business environment by advocating responsive legislation, regulatory practices and implementing programs to improve the business and tourism climates. This division is responsible for representing the business community before governmental bodies, working with local governments, and providing representation in coalition building organizations.

The Chamber’s Public Policy division, with the support of our Chamber members, provides ongoing advocacy and assistance to our local governments and regional authorities. The Chamber’s Public Policy Committees and Task Forces meet monthly to assess the issues affecting our community and develop policy positions and initiatives providing a voice for the business community and a platform for effective advocacy.

What Is Business Advocacy?

Business advocacy is the process of representing the interests of employers and communicating how proposed laws, regulations, funding decisions, and government initiatives may affect the business community. The Chamber’s advocacy efforts include:

• Monitoring local, state, and federal policy developments
• Meeting with elected officials and government leaders
• Reviewing proposed legislation and regulations
• Developing public policy positions
• Communicating business priorities to decision-makers
• Providing testimony, letters, and public comments
• Participating in regional and statewide coalitions
• Keeping Chamber members informed

Why it’s important: Individual businesses may not have the time or resources to closely monitor every government decision. The Chamber brings businesses together to provide a stronger, more coordinated voice.

How the Manatee Chamber Represents Businesses

The Chamber’s Public Policy division works throughout the year to identify issues affecting employers and the broader community. Our advocacy process includes:

• Listening to Chamber Members – member input helps the Chamber understand the challenges, opportunities, and policy concerns affecting businesses of different sizes and industries.
• Researching the Issues – the Chamber gathers information, consults subject-matter experts, reviews potential business impacts, and works with community partners to better understand complex policy matters.
• Developing Policy Positions – Chamber committees and task forces discuss key issues and may recommend positions or priorities for consideration by the Chamber’s leadership and Board of Directors.
• Communicating With Decision-Makers – the Chamber shares business perspectives with elected officials, government staff, agencies, and regional partners through meetings, correspondence, testimony, policy agendas, and coalition efforts.
• Keeping Members Informed – members receive information about legislation, government decisions, community initiatives, and opportunities to communicate with public officials.
